Medical Dictionary:

DocHoc.com is a free information bank for medical students and doctors. It consists of articles, exam questions, essays, diagrams and notes. Original content is uploaded by users themselves with no third party input.

What a waste!
Each year, students create imaginative and innovative ways of approaching and learning medical topics. Inventive images, memory triggering mnemonics and enthralling essays are to name but a few. Once exams are over, these notes are often left aside unlikely to be read again, perhaps occasionally brushed off for a presentation or tutorial but for the most part lost forever.

Why reinvent the wheel? “See one, Do one, Teach one!”
As self directed learning has become a keystone for medical education in Ireland we encourage students to use our site to work synergistically with their own medical education program.  Every student has at least one topic which they have really grasped and perhaps even loved, we encourage them to share their notes with others. Unfortunately in the highly competitive world of medicine there exists the attitude of “well I had to spend 7 hours in the library last year coming up with a mnemonic for glycolysis so now you have to!”. We at DocHoc.com are COMPLETELY opposed to this!!! Seen one, Do one, Teach one. This goes for exam questions and not just medical procedures!

How does it work?
The first time you log into the site you are asked to register. Iinformation can be submitted to DocHoc.com, reviewed and uploaded. If it passes our inspection by one of our editors, then the article will be added to our database.

Resources and the “Web”
DocHoc.com will soon include a discussion board on which students from all over Ireland will be able to submit questions and discuss current topics. Currently we have searched the internet for excellent, quality assured links to sites for Radiology, Dermatology, Anatomy and ECG’s. These links are intended only as a starting point for student research on the web. Using these resources, students can then link to other quality sites, and the “web” in self directed “web” based learning spreads.

Why should people use this site?
Firstly, until now, there has been no group site specifically designed to cater for medical students from all colleges in Ireland. Secondly this information is passed on in good faith from other Irish doctors and students. Thirdly, it’s free. The only requirement is to provide other users with the same contribution that has been extended to them.

Currently there exist several excellent college sites which cater for their own students.DocHoc.com aims to link students from other colleges together. Online study groups may now well be a possibility where students from different colleges may study together, and why not? Soon they may well work together!!

And Finally, IT’S FUN!
For many students this may be the very first time original work they have created will be shown to others in a forum open to their peers. We would hope that by usingDocHoc.com students would develop a love for teaching and research. We would hope that this site would encourage them in the future to pursue same. We would hope that consultants and G.P’s would agree to review top rated articles each year in certain subjects, in order to award the most original and interesting topic submitted by students.
